Brunch: 11:30 AM, UMC Aspen Room
Opera: Sunday, March 18, 2012 — 2:00 PM, Macky Auditorium
by Giacomo Puccini
Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica are two parts of a trilogy of one-act operas composed by Giacomo Puccini in 1917-18. Suor Angelica is a drama of desire set in a 17th century convent; Sister Angelica longs to reconnect with her noble family and make peace for her sins, but has hidden a terrible secret from the sisters with whom she lives. When her aunt comes to the convent, Angelica must face the truth of her past. By contrast, Gianni Schicchi is a farce based on an incident in Dante’s Divine Comedy. When Buoso Donati dies without leaving a will favorable to his relatives, they connive to inherit the property by deceiving the townspeople with the help of Gianni Schicchi, a newcomer to the town. Yet Schicchi has plans of his own regarding his daughter’s marriage and Buoso’s wealth. These two operas show the breadth of Puccini’s work, from his haunting melodic talent to his comic skill.
Dear UWC Board,
Mary Ann Hartigan has very graciously agreed to host our Tri-Board Meeting of May 17 at her home at 1336 Meadow Ave. Let’s plan to gather at about 11:00 for our meeting, followed by a pot-luck lunch. Current board members, please each bring a dish to share. Please email me what you intend to bring so I can request some adjustments if we’re short in one food group or another. The Tri-Board consists of this year’s board, next year’s board and the officers-elect who will be officers in 2012-13. I will email you later with the expected attendance number when I send the agenda.
Please bring your notebook to pass on to next year’s committee chair if you are not continuing in the position and 5 (note increase) copies of your annual report. Reports will be distributed as follows:
Incoming President (Rosemary)
Incoming Officer or Chairperson of your committee
Incoming President-Elect (Jeannie)
Archival Record (Historian – Ginnie)
Outgoing President (Kathy) – this is the additional copy
I’m attaching the Annual Report format here. Tri-Board Annual Report Blank Form
If you would like a paper copy of it, let me know and I’ll get it to you this week. Also, if you don’t have an easy way to make copies, get the original to me, and I’ll make the additional copies.
If you are not able to attend the Tri-Board Meeting, please let me know, and please arrange to have your annual reports and notebook delivered to me before the meeting.
Thank you,
Kathy Randall
UWC Board is holding a Wine & Cheese Party on Sunday, October 16, 2011 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the home of Rosemary Getsie specifically for new members. Evite invitations for this event have been sent to all new members. If you are a new member (joined any time after Nov. 1, 2010) and have not received your Evite for some reason, please contact the Membership Chair, Beth Rauch (303-442-2704; etrauch@comcast.net). We have over 30 new members this year and we want to make sure all new members are included and receive invitations in some form. This is a wonderful opportunity for new members to become acquainted with each other and to meet the board and we look forward to seeing all of you on October 16.
Rosemary Getsie’s address (Niwot vs. Longmont) may cause a problem for those using MapQuest or other map services. Her house is at 6434 Eagle Court, Niwot, located in the vicinity of the Lake Valley Golf Club north of Boulder and west of Diagonal. Please contact Rosemary (303-998-0607; rgetsie@comcast.net) if you need directions to her home.

Synopsis
In the Tennessee town of New Hope Valley, a young woman learns that beauty can bear a terrible cost. Susannah draws the attention of several men at a church square dance, including a traveling preacher. Jealous wives begin to gossip. The community struggles to uphold societal and religious expectations, setting a tragic chain of events in motion. Lush, tuneful Appalachian music including Ain’t It a Pretty Night colors this 1955 version of the apocryphal tale of Susannah and the Elders. Carlisle Floyd’s first major opera, it is the second most performed in the American repertoire (after Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess).
