Afternoon Book Group

The Afternoon Book Group is composed of vivacious, loquacious and knowledgeable women who meet monthly to discuss books. We usually meet at 2 P.M. on the fourth Tuesday of the month. One of our members hosts the group in her home and provides light refreshments; another leads the discussion. The number of attendees varies widely from month to month but invariably we have a lively conversation and we always welcome guests.

Each year we get together in June to decide on the book list for the following season that runs from September to June. Half our chosen titles are fiction, half non-fiction. Within these categories we include one memoir/biography and one classic. This year we are reading such diverse books as One Thousand Chestnut Trees and Just Like Us. The former book is a semi-autobiographical novel by a Korean-American; the latter is by the journalist wife of our governor.

All our members are encouraged to make suggestions and can propose a book without having read it. Perhaps a friend has praised it, or it has received great reviews. Finally a vote takes place and our list is set for the following season. The meeting culminates with a potluck lunch.

If you are interested in joining us or examining our 2011-2012 list of books to be discussed contact one of the co-leaders: Shirley Deeter (720-564-1509; ssdeeter@comcast.net) or Ruth Harvey (303-975-6614; ruth.harvey@comcast.net).
